The absence of scientifically collated statistical data is adversely affecting the functioning of State Finance Commissions, K.N. Harilal, chairman, 7th State Finance Commission, has said.
Dr. Harilal emphasised the importance of statistical data in policy formulation. The decennial Census should have been held in 2021 and it is now 2025. This is the first time since Independence that the Union government has put off the decennial exercise which is critical for planning, Dr. Harilal said, addressing a workshop on ‘Employment data in Kerala: coverage, issues and concerns’ organised by the Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI) and the Kerala State Statistical Commission on Tuesday.
The State should institute a mechanism for the comprehensive collection of statistical data that reflects changing socio-economic realities, PPRI director Mohanakumar S. said.
J. Devika, Praveena Kodoth, and Vinoj Abraham of the Centre for Development Studies, representatives of K-DISC, State Planning Board, and the Plantation Corporation of Kerala spoke. State Statistical Commission chairman P.C. Mohanan presided.
