The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday (March 6, 2025) said it has revoked the market cess of 1% being levied on maize under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1987. The decision to cancel the market cess on purchase and sale of maize in regulated markets across the State, followed representations received from farmers in this regard.

Maize is cultivated in about 4 lakh hectares across Tamil Nadu and the production is about 29 lakh MT. Though the crop was being cultivated in the State primarily for cattle fodder initially, it went up considerably as the crop has been in high demand for ethanol production. “The demand for maize has increased, as it is used for ethanol production,” an official release said.

The Tamil Nadu government has been encouraging farmers in the cultivation of maize in this regard, it added.
